Setting the record straight

We look forward to addressing the challenging issues of substance use and overdose in partnership with Mayor Lurie and his team.

SAN FRANCISCO, February 6, 2025–In a recent news article by Janie Har, of the Associated Press, San Francisco AIDS Foundation is named as “opposing” the Fentanyl State of Emergency Ordinance, which passed February 4, 10-1 by the Board of Supervisors.

The ordinance will allow the Mayor to solicit private donations to fund city initiatives, and enter into contracts that address addiction, homelessness, and mental health without going through a competitive bidding process.

We would like to make clear that we do not oppose the ordinance, but have raised numerous questions about its implementation, how success of the ordinance will be measured, and the impact on fair use of public funds.

Our CEO, Dr. Tyler TerMeer, spoke personally with Mayor Lurie to clarify SFAF’s position.

We look forward to addressing the challenging issues of substance use and overdose in partnership with Mayor Lurie and his team, and deeply appreciate the Mayor’s leadership in prioritizing responses to these issues.
