Steven Bracco is the reigning superstar of Santa Skivvies Run, a 1.5-mile festive fun-run produced by and benefiting San Francisco AIDS Foundation. While he doesn’t race to cross the finish line first, he’s a champ in fundraising for the free, local services that prevent HIV transmission and help those living with HIV maintain their health. In the four years that he’s participated, Steven has raised an impressive $19,054. He’s been the top Santa Skivvies fundraiser for the last three years, and was part of the highest fundraising team last year.
His fundraising success is due to starting early and posting often on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “It’s easy to miss things on Facebook, so you have to constantly post about it,” he said. On Facebook, he shares photos from past Santa Skivvies with the link to his donation page. He also reaches out to family and friends directly through email and phone calls. When people donate, he publicly thanks them on Facebook.
Why does Steven fundraise for San Francisco AIDS Foundation?
Steven has benefited from the free testing services at the foundation’s sexual health clinic Magnet. Plus, he says he realizes the impact and need for the resources the foundation provides to the community. “I know how long the foundation has been a part of the San Francisco community. I see how their services impact our community and know how important it is that the organization is here.”
Plus, Steven says the event is fun all around.
“This year, the run is back in the Castro. It starts and ends at Lookout. And it’s not too early—it starts at 10:30. Everyone’s out to have a great time—to meet new people, and make new friends.”
If you’re not comfortable (or too cold) wearing only your skivvies, Steven says there are plenty of folks that come a little more covered up.
“A lot of people wear costumes—and (they) do an amazing job of making costumes that are something other than a Santa outfit. People dress up as reindeer, snowmen, elves… but of course there are always lots of people out there running around in their underwear.”
Last year, Steven and his team were sponsored by the underwear company Addicted, which donated matching red skivvies emblazoned with the Addicted logo for the entire team to wear during the run.
He still has yet to decide what he’ll wear this year, but he’s brainstorming ways to use his outfit as part of his fundraising strategy.
“I encourage people who have never participated before to sign up,” says Steven. “You won’t regret running—it’s such a great time!”
