SAN FRANCISCO, December 12, 2017—San Francisco AIDS Foundation is saddened by the death of Mayor Ed Lee, early this morning. As a long-time civil servant, Mayor Lee cared deeply for San Francisco and its residents. During his time as mayor, San Francisco made incredible progress toward ending the HIV epidemic.
“As we mourn Mayor Lee, we recognize his decades of service, his steadfast commitment to the people of San Francisco, and his support of HIV prevention and care initiatives,” said Joe Hollendoner, San Francisco AIDS Foundation CEO. “Mayor Lee was committed to end the HIV epidemic and we will miss him and his leadership. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and all those who had the good fortune of working with him.”
Under Mayor Lee’s leadership, San Francisco established the Getting to Zero initiative, aimed at achieving zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero stigma. Mayor Lee’s commitment to the initiative reached beyond principle to practice: He worked with the Board of Supervisors to backfill more than $22 million in federal cuts while committing additional funding.
Mayor Lee was also an ardent supporter of the LGBT community, demonstrating his support for efforts to open Strut in 2016. Strut, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation center in the Castro, was the city’s first health and wellness center for gay and bi men and trans people.
San Francisco has experienced a 47% reduction in new HIV diagnoses and a 29% reduction in AIDS-related deaths since 2011 when Mayor Lee was appointed.
