The number of San Franciscans using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)—the once-daily oral medication that blocks the transmission of HIV—is rising. But, estimates show that only one in six projected users have adopted this effective HIV prevention strategy. Where can those who choose to take PrEP get it? And, when they find a provider, how do they pay for it?
To provide answers, San Francisco AIDS Foundation is partnering with local health providers, government, and community organizations to host the first public PrEP Open House Forum. This event will provide an opportunity for people interested in PrEP to learn about their options and to identify health coverage that fits their health needs and budget during the enrollment period for California Covered.
San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener, who publicly disclosed his own PrEP use last fall, will provide opening remarks highlighting the important role that PrEP plays in the fight against HIV. Attendees will hear real-life experiences from PrEP users during a panel discussion. During breakout sessions, attendees will connect with experts on select topics including how to ask your health care provider about PrEP, how to find an insurance plan through Covered California that covers PrEP, and how to estimate what the costs will be. Finally, attendees can speak directly with providers and other community groups to get answers in real time during the PrEP Health Fair.
This event is supported by Kink.com and Gilead Sciences, Inc.

About San Francisco AIDS Foundation
San Francisco AIDS Foundation works to end the HIV epidemic in the city where it began, and eventually everywhere. Established in 1982, our mission is the radical reduction of new infections in San Francisco because we refuse to accept HIV as inevitable. Through education, advocacy and direct services for prevention and care, we are confronting HIV in communities most vulnerable to the disease.
