American human rights activist Cleve Jones celebrates his 60th birthday with a fundraiser to benefit San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s new center for health and wellness on Castro Street.

Jones joined Gay Liberation as a teenager in Phoenix and hitchhiked to San Francisco in 1973, where he was befriended by Harvey Milk. Jones worked with Milk on the campaign against Proposition 6, the Briggs Initiative, and as a student intern in Milk’s City Hall office. Jones co-founded the SF AIDS Foundation in 1983 and is the originator of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, which was first displayed in 1987.

His memoir, “Stitching a Revolution,” was published by HarperCollins in 2000. Jones served as historical consultant for the Gus Van Sant film, “MILK,” and is portrayed in the film by Emile Hirsch. Following the passage of California’s Proposition 8, Jones joined the Advisory Board of the newly-formed American Foundation for Equal Rights, the organization that hired David Boies and Theodore Olson to successfully challenge Prop. 8 in federal court. In 2009, Jones was one of the principle organizers of the National Equality March on Washington, DC.

For the past ten years, Jones has worked with UNITE HERE, the hospitality workers union, campaigning for better pay, safe working conditions and affordable healthcare for hotel, casino and food service workers in the US and Canada. Now working on a second memoir, Cleve Jones continues to advocate and agitate for the rights of LGBT people, workers, immigrants and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Cleve’s birthday party is hosted by celebrated drag performer Juanita More with food, dancing, performances, a special birthday cake by Top Chef winner Yigit Pura of Tout Sweet Bakery, and the best dance tunes of the past four decades from DJ Page Hodel and Go BANG! DJs Steve Fabus and Sergio. Joining Cleve for this special occasion is screenwriter, director and Academy Award winner, Dustin Lance Black, and actor and singer Jonathan Groff, who will perform at the event.
